Built for the machine, not the art department

Most image-to-vector converters are made for illustrators, and it shows: they hand you a polygon with 40,000 vertices and no idea what a kerf is. This one is built around what a cutting machine can actually do.

Curves export as arcs, not facets

Circles arrive in your CAM software as DXF bulge arcs instead of hundred-chord polygons, so the machine holds feed rate through every curve.

Thin features get rescued

Strips too narrow to survive the cut are grown to your limit. Anything with a solid core is left exactly as drawn. Squares stay squares.

Fine detail survives the kerf

Slots narrower than your cutter get widened so detail comes out as detail, instead of two walls merging into a single cut.

Fall-out flagged before you cut

The middle of an O drops free the moment the surrounding cut completes. The tracer outlines those islands in red so you can bridge or accept them before cutting.

Thicken with intent

Push outer edges out or shrink holes in. Positive always means more material, and outer and inner edges are controlled separately.

Quote before you commit

Pierce count and total cut length update live as you adjust. Multiply by your feed rate and price the job before touching a sheet.

What happens under the hood

The tracer is a real geometry pipeline, not a filter. Each stage exists because of something a cutting machine needs from the file.

Stage 1

Threshold

The image becomes a two-tone mask of part and background, split at a brightness you control or picked automatically from the image's own histogram.

Stage 2

Boundary trace

A marching-squares tracer follows every edge in the mask at sub-pixel precision, producing closed loops with holes and outlines told apart by winding.

Stage 3

Geometry cleanup

Specks are dropped, paths simplified, corners optionally rounded, and minimum material and cut widths enforced on the shape itself, not painted over.

Stage 4

Arc fitting

Runs of points that lie on a circle collapse into true arcs and straight runs merge into single lines, cutting thousands of vertices down to a handful.

Stage 5

DXF R12 out

Closed polylines with bulge arcs, outer boundaries counter-clockwise and holes clockwise, which is the layout CAD and CAM software expects.

Know what converts before you start

The tracer follows the boundary between light and dark, which means the source image decides most of the result. High-contrast artwork converts well. Soft gradients do not.

Questions

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. Tracing happens entirely in your browser on your own processor, which is why it responds instantly as you move a slider. Only the finished outline coordinates and your chosen file name are sent, and only at the moment you export a file.

What image formats can I convert to DXF?

PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, and BMP, anything your browser can display. A transparent PNG is the best input of all: the tracer uses its alpha channel directly and skips the threshold problem entirely.

What DXF version does it write?

DXF R12, with closed polylines on layer 0 and arcs stored as bulges. R12 is deliberately the oldest revision, because every CAD and CAM package reads it without argument.

Which software and machines can use the files?

Anything that reads DXF: Fusion 360, LightBurn, SheetCam, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inkscape, QCAD, VCarve, and the controllers built into most cutting tables and routers. Outer boundaries are wound counter-clockwise and holes clockwise, which is how CAM software tells them apart.

Can I convert a photograph?

Only if it has genuine hard contrast. Continuous-tone photographs have no single edge to follow. Reduce the photo to a two-tone stencil first, then trace that. The examples page shows the difference.
